French players performed swan-dives on the water-logged pitch as they passed around the golden trophy in front of the world's media. Benjamin Mendy was the first to make use of the rain, sliding with the World Cup in hand towards lucky photographers.
The flash storm came down just as the France players were getting set to step onto the podium, giving the losing Croatia stars the chance to run back to the dressing room. Before then, France had tried to create some thunder of their own with the travelling fans. Inspired by Iceland, who exited the World Cup at the group stage, France players orchestrated a 'Thunder Clap' with their fans.
The French players appreciating N’Golo Kante.
27-year-old Kante has enjoyed a whirlwind career after moving to England with Leicester before joining Chelsea, winning two Premier League titles and a World Cup in the space of three years. After their greatest ever triumph, the France squad proudly sang Kante's name at their team hotel in front of their jubilant families and friends.Wednesday, 11 July 2018
Arsenal sign Matteo Guendouzi from Lorient for £8m... as young midfielder
Arsenal have completed the £8million signing of midfielder Matteo Guendouzi from Lorient.
The 19-year-old, who has joined the Gunners just a day after Uruguay international Lucas Torreira signed for £25m, got straight down to business on Wednesday by training with his new team-mates.
Before training, Guendouzi posed for a series of photos as Arsenal supporters caught first glimpse of their new signing, who bears a striking resemblance to Chelsea's David Luiz.Guendouzi, Arsenal's fifth signing of the summer transfer window, has been handed the No 29 shirt.
Ronaldo's Real Madrid had competed with Lionel Messi's Barca since his arrival
For nine years it was the greatest show on earth – the two best players of their generation in a season-long slog of 'anything you can do I can do better'.
We will miss their battle to be the best, and Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will miss each other in the way all great sporting rivals end up longing for the once sworn enemy.Messi invariably had the upper hand in the early days but just when it seemed Ronaldo was a beaten man he won three straight Champions Leagues and he leaves having pulled level in the Ballon d'Or stakes too.
Messi was already established in La Liga when Ronaldo was unveiled in front of 80,000 supporters at the Santiago Bernabeu. The main stage presentation on the pitch complete with catwalk seemed completely over the top back in 2009 and at first Ronaldo failed to live up to the hype.
Unai Emery put his players through their paces at London Colney on Friday
Unai Emery continued to step up the intensity of pre-season training for his Arsenalstars with an exhausting session on the hottest day of the year so far.
The likes of Hector Bellerin, Shkodran Mustafi and Calum Chambers were hardly able to stand come the end of the session with temperatures hitting 30 degrees.
Despite the heat, Emery ensured he got every last ounce of energy out of his players with another gruelling workout at the club's London Colney base. The Gunners took to Facebook to share a video of their players completing a sprinting exercise, writing: 'We knew pre-season was tough... and the boys are being worked HARD'.
Full-back Bellerin can be seen collapsing to the floor the moment he crosses the line as Mustafi and Carl Jenkinson quickly follow suit.

Brazil 1-2 Belgium: Kevin De Bruyne wins World Cup
Friday night is that new nations are coming to the table, developing players and systems to beat the so-called old guard.
Belgium out-thought and out-played Brazil for 75 minutes of a quite breathless quarter final - delivering such an impeccable display of counter-attacking football that Tite’s side could not, despite everything, find a way back. The Brazilian team walked into the place with regulation green back-packs, looking like a group on some kind of commando mission, though things didn’t start well. Marcelo got lost on his way to the dressing room. Casemiro was denied entry to the stadium because he had forgotten his accreditation. The effect was very similar out on the pitch.
They began well enough, exposing a weakness to the set-piece for which Belgium looked like they might pay a very heavy price. The game wasn’t even ten minutes old when Miranda flicked on a corner from Neymar and Thiago Silva directed it onto the left upright with his right knee and Paulinho, unmarked, received another corner but could not find any power.
World Cup 2018 quarter-final – Uruguay 0-2 France: Antoine Griezmann doubles lead after horrendous Fernando Muslera error
Uruguay win a free-kick moments later but the South American side fail to do anything with it.Uruguay's roughshod tactics see France win a free-kick out wide on the left but Antoine Griezmann's cross onto the box is not a great one and it results in a Uruguay free-kick.
Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus has moved beyond what is termed 'science fiction
Italian fans and press would love to be debating their team's World Cup quarter-final right now. Lorenzo Insigne cutting in behind Andrea Belotti? Can Andrea Barzagli squeeze 120 minutes out of his ageing body?Wednesday, 4 July 2018
Real Madrid consider £88m bid from Juventus for Cristiano Ronaldo
Ronaldo cast serious doubt on his future in Madrid moments after winning a third successive Champions League in Kiev and Juventus appear to be testing the club's resolve as he angles for an improved contract. He is contracted at the Bernabeu until 2021 with a release clause standing at a gargantuan £886m. Players at Madrid regularly flirt with rival European sides in a bid to force club president Florentino Perez's hand and in Ronaldo's case this time, he wants to become the highest-paid player in the world.

Sweden 1-0 Switzerland: Emil Forsberg's deflected strike

Brazil beat Mexico 2-0 in the last-16 World Cup clash on Monday in Russia
Taking the ball across the edge of Mexico’s area, he was aware of Willian arriving into space behind him, backheeled to him and spun away. He was in the six-yard box to slide home the Chelsea man’s returning cross. Yet the Mexico manager’s claim Neymar’s histrionics had taken the ‘pace’ out of the game and ruined his team’s tempo was pushing things. Antonio Mateu, was close enough to find no fault, yet Neymar tumbled away to his right in an act of melodrama which took four minutes to conclude. Mercifully, no one saw the need to involve VAR. The Mexican coach, Juan Carlos Osorio, launched into a quite understandable attack on Neymar’s gamesmanship.
