The Portugal skipper just couldn't find the magic as his country crashed out of the tournament

The Portugal skipper just couldn't find the magic as his country crashed out of the tournament                                                          Edison Cavani came up with the goods for Uruguay on Saturday night as they secured safe progression into the World Cup quarter-finals with a narrow victory over Portugal.
Cavani's brace steered the South Americans through as his second half strike cancelled out Pepe's equaliser for the Portugues.

France 4-3 Argentina: Kylian Mbappe's second-half brace send france to the round of 8

Mbappe's first goal was a moment of magic as he managed to turn inside the box and fire a low shot into the back of the net                                        Kylian Mbappe capitalised on a creaking, aged, inadequate Argentinian defence to score twice in four devastating second half minutes. But his signature moment was the devastating run through the heart of the Argentinian side - echoes of a 19-year-old Michael Owen in St Etienne exactly 20 years to the day – which sent his nation on their way. The talk had been about a No 10 who was supposedly predestined to drive his nation on and on, confounding every setback along the road. 'El General de Gol' was how Buenos Aires paper 'Ole' encapsulated Argentinian matchday belief in Lionel Messi.

Cavani shone alongside Luis Suarez for the South Americans in the 2-1 win

Edinson Cavani cannot contain his excitement after scoring in Uruguay's win over Portugal                                        Edison Cavani  came up with the goods for Uruguay on Saturday night as they secured safe progression into the World Cup quarter-finals with a narrow victory over Portugal.
Cavani's brace steered the South Americans through as his second half strike cancelled out Pepe's equaliser for the Portuguese.
Here, Sportsmail has rated the squads and declared the heroes and the villains for these two nations.Tireless defending, he never gave Portugal's attack a moment's peace and got forward with energy too.

Argentina take on France on Saturday in the first of the last-16 clashes

Argentina star Lionel Messi will be aiming to make a major impact against France on Saturday                                                       The Barcelona star was on the scoresheet in Argentina's crucial victory over Nigeria and looked sharp in training as Jorge Sampaoli's team prepared for the game against France.

Cristiano Ronaldo trains with Portugal as they prepare for World Cup last-16

Quaresma and Ronaldo share a joke during a session at Portugal's World Cup base on Thursday                                                         Portugal may be facing a nightmare run if they are to win their first World Cup but you wouldn't know it by the mood in the camp, which paints a relaxed picture not befitting of the pressure cooker they find themselves in.

England 0-1 Belgium:Group G as Gareth Southgate's men will face Colombia in last 16

That goal by the 23-year-old was his first-ever for his country on his ninth appearance for the Red Devils                                              Adnan Januzaj, stuck his excellent 51st minute shot past his former Sunderland team-mate Jordan Pickford did it feel a little bit familiar, a little bit here-we-go-again, a little bit like England

Japan 0-1 Poland: Asians squeeze through to World Cup knockout stages on fair play despite Jan Bednarek's win

Japan gather together after the end of their warm-up for a team talk ahead of their final group match                                                  The Asian side's thrilling advance to the brink of the last 16 - which had so much to do with Colombia imploding in the first minutes of the opening game the two sides played - had always obscured their technical deficiencies at the back.

Senegal 0-1 Colombia:The South Americans will take on the runners-up in Group G

Barcelona defender Mina rose well to powerfully head home a cross from the right for his second goal of the World Cup                                                  The Africans finished the group stage locked together on points and goals with Japan and were eliminated on the basis of their disciplinary record.
Still their supporters danced and swayed in the stands.

Amir Khan will face Samuel Vargas in Birmingham on September 8

Amir Khan (left) and Samuel Vargas will square up for real in Birmingham in September                                                          The Canadian is ranked 10th in the world by the WBA and will provide a step-up in quality for the 31-year-old welterweight.Khan has promised fireworks: 'One of my aims this year was to be as active as possible, so I'm very happy to get back in the ring again so soon against Samuel Vargas,' he said.

Portugal trained at a high intensity on Wednesday ahead of the Uruguay clash

Cristiano Ronaldo and Co looked focused as Portugal trained in Moscow on Wednesday                                                       Cristiano Ronaldo showed off his astonishing leg muscles as Portugal trained at their Moscow base on Wednesday morning ahead of the tough last-16 clash with Uruguay.
The weight of this contest is so apparent that unlike Portugal's previous training sessions in Russia, there was a certain air of focus and intensity about it that even Ronaldo's legs would be feeling it.

Serbia 0-2 Brazil: Superb Paulinho finish and thumping Thiago Silva header sets up last 16 clash with Mexico as Tite's side top Group E

The Selecao came together and celebrated going ahead in a game they had to avoid defeat in to progress                                                Serbia were applauded from the field by their noisy, vibrant supporters told us that this had been a little bit closer than Brazil would have liked.
Brazil will now face Mexico in the last sixteen in Samara. They remain beguiling to watch and will probably get better from here. Last night, for example, there were signs that Neymar is growing in to the tournament after recovering from his long-term ankle injury.

Sweden went 3-0 up in the 74th minute when Edson Alvarez scored an own goal via an attempted clearance

Carlos Salcedo (centre) and Ochoa (left) react after Alvarez's own goal saw their World Cup fate left hanging by a thread
Mexican supporters in the stand finally celebrated. Sombreros were up in the air, drinks were splattering and fans joyously embraced. On the pitch, some Mexican players broke were on their haunches, breaking down in tears.
Tears of distress? For some of them, surely. Kim Young-Gwon had scored a shock winning goal for South Korea against Germany and while the news filtered through for supporters on their smartphone, many Mexican players did not appear to know. They thought they had blown it all.

Holders Germany crash OUT of the World Cup

Sebastian Rudy of Germany attempts to console team mate Mario Gomez after the final whistle went in their defeat                                             Germany, reigning world champions, the consummate tournament team, are out of the World Cup at the group stage.Sweden won the group by beating Mexico 3-0 in the other match taking place at the same time, meaning Germany needed to defeat South Korea to get through in second place. Germany would have progressed with a win at the Kazan Arena but barely looked capable of scoring against the Koreans, let alone going on to successfully defend the title they won in Brazil four years ago.

The defeat means Australia finish bottom of Group C, while both France and Denmark qualifying for last 16

Guerrero doubled Peru's lead early in the second half, scooping the ball past Ryan courtesy of a slight deflection                                                      The South Americans through — they were already destined to go home — but Guerrero’s journey has been such that it will nevertheless go down in Peruvian football history.
The captain feared he would never get to play in a World Cup after being banned for 14 months for testing positive for traces of cocaine. the 34 year-old hooked home a second half shot to seal Peru’s first victory of the tournament and end Australia’s dreams, the 26,000 Peru fans packed into the Fisht Stadium went into meltdown.

Denmark 0-0 France:first goalless draw at World Cup after 38 games as both sides ease into last 16

Raphael Varane heads towards goal but his effort drifts way wide of Denmark's right post on Tuesday afternoon                                                     FIFA’s big rule book and see if there was any way that we could send both France and Denmark home.
The whistles that greeted the conclusion of the game almost drowned out the stadium music. That in itself is not such a bad thing but we have not seen much like this in Russia 2018 and we should be very relieved about that. Both knew a draw would leave them in the top two places in a group where it was hard to work out whether first was any more use than second.

Iceland 1-2 Croatia: Ivan Perisic strikes late to maintain perfect record and send minnows home from the World Cup

The midfielder made no mistake when presented with his team's first clear opening of the game in the second half                                                           Ivan Perisic thrashed a Croatia winner just as stoppage time approached, capitalising on Iceland throwing men forward on the hunt for a second goal.

The Argentina legend stood out with his antics and unveiled a flag of himself,Maradona

After swaying for a few seconds, Maradona then gives a woozy grin and thumbs up to camera                                                 Diego Maradona was at the centre of another storm with his uncouth behaviour in the stands at St Petersburg during Argentina's World Cup win over Nigeria.
The 57-year-old looked increasingly the worse for wear each time the camera panned to him, swearing and giving insulting hand gestures.

NIGERIA 1-2 ARGENTINA - MARTIN SAMUEL IN ST PETERSBURG:

Marcos Rojo celebrated his late winner with Lionel Messi on his back, but the striker had carried his team for most of the game                                                  Marcos Rojo that propelled Argentina into the final 16, but this was about him. This was about our desire for one player to stay. Save Messi. That is what the neutrals desired. He shot, across goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, and the ball moved obediently into the far corner of Nigeria’s net without further instruction. A gem of a goal from a gem of a player. Argentina’s travelling support, but their joy was spread wide. It would take a heart of stone not to smile at this. Messi endures.
